Rad Rats Attack!

Situation: aboard the Lucky Strike, an outbreak of Rad Rats!

The only crew up and about are the two Lupine brothers Rex and Fidel. They are going about their business when the first Rad Rat pops its head through a doorway.

Reminder: Savage Worlds uses a deck of playing cards to determine initiative.

Rex draws Joker, enters upper cargo bay and sees a Rad rat.
Rat acts on 8H, attacks but fails.

Rex draws 7C, rat 7H. Rat attacks, fails. Rex (attacking at -2 for size of rat) aces his d8, for 13 total. Making that 11, still a raise over the 5 needed to hit the rat. Damage with blaster: pathetic roll; spends a 'bennie' and gets a hit with a raise. Rat is dead. Alarms ring after weapon fire.

Fidel climbs down from engine room to join Rex.

Fidel draws 10, rats 6, Rex 2. Fidel holds. Rat in lower cargo hold climbs the ladder, using his turn. Fidel and Rex both fire, Fidel first. He shoots (d6) and aces 3 times! giving an adjusted total of 18, so many raises! Hits for 42 points. (Can that be right? several damage dice aced, one twice.)

Rat is dead.

Rats get Joker, Fidel 7, Rex 5. Rats in "basement" activate, climbing stairs to main deck. Rex heads back to check "basement"; Fidel descends to main cargo floor, sees a rat.

Fidel Jack, rats 7, Rex 4. Fidel fires! Miss. Rats ascend to confront Rex, only one can attack. Rat gets a 9 (a raise) and bits at Rex; it rolls 17, kills Rex. (Well, I let him use a wild die, so let's say he's got two wounds and though "down", isn't really dead.)

Rats 10, Mavis 9, Fidel 4. First rat gets raise, stuns Fidel. Remaining two rats are stumped by doors: one climbs to the galley, one stays in the hallway. Mavis draws her ray gun, starts aft. Fidel rolls spirit, fails.

Rats king, Mavis 5, Fidel 3. Rat attacks stunned Fidel, gets a hit but can't penetrate space suit. Mavis opens door, sees the rat waiting. She rolls two raises on wild die, for 13, a hit with two raises: 26 pts! Dead rat. Fidel tries Spirit again, staggers to his feet.

Rats 10, Mavis 5, Fidel 2. Rat runs down from galley, bites at Mavis but can't get a hit. Rat in lower cargo bay attacks Fidel, fails to get a hit.
Mavis fires, rat stunned. Fidel fires, misses. Rat in front of Mavis stays stunned.

Rats Ace of Spade, Fidel Ace Diamonds, Mavis Queen.
Rat recovers; neither attack succeeds. Fidel fires yet again, misses again. Mavis shoots, misses.

Rats King, Fidel 9, Mavis 8. Rats bite again: both fail. Fidel fires: miss (rats are -2 to hit so will need a raise). Mavis fires, getting a raise and hits, for 17 points! Dead rat.

Mavis King, Rat 10, Fidel 2. Mavis descends to basement, looking for rats. Last rat attacks Fidel, fails. Fidel remembers his claws, but misses.

Fidel and Mavis draw 6s, rats a 5. Mavis checks basement. Fidel uses claw attack: 9, a hit. Stuns the rat. Rat makes its Spirit, gets back up.

Mavis J, Fidel 8, rat 4. Mavis returns to main deck. Fidel claws again, misses. Rat gets raise, stuns Fidel. Fidel recovers.

Fidel ace, rat Q, Mavis 5. Fidel claws again, a hit! Rolls 9, kills rat. Barely.

That's the end of the Rad Rats as far as the crew can tell. A good practice run through the rules, IMO.

Captain Salihah Khaa commands the Lucky Strike, a salvaged gunboat with almost all of her guns removed. Captain Khaa uses her to maintain independence from any government in the Slipstream.

The Lucky Strike spends her time sliding between fragments, looking for the big hit, a treasure trove of alien technology that will bring in enough money for the Captain and her crew to live a life free from stress.

Crew

Captain Salihah Khaa (Gyptosian nomad), Second Mavis Dilapree (Valkyria), brothers Rex and Fidel Araroo (Lupine)).

Salihah Khaa, Gyptosian

Salihah is a Wild Card, Captain and owner of the Lucky Strike. Her past is that of a Gyptosian nomad, escaping the rising power of her fragment's next ruler, Ramenhotep XXX.

Her band of nomads was ambushed by Pharoah's troops while she was on a mission in New Gyptos City. Word reached her before the Pharoah's agents could capture her and she used the proceeds of her "mission" to hire passage on the first ship outbound from Gyptos.

Ship Stats

The Lucky Strike was originally constructed by the Skalin as a small (for them) messenger boat. Like all Skalin ships, it is angular, many-decked, and was once well armed.

Since being lost to pirates, the Lucky Strike has passed through many owners and a number of modifications.

WH:L AAR 03: Dungeon

Gar't tries his luck in a Capalan Cavern

Leaving Durkenwall with his pride intact, Gar't follows his nose into the mountains. His dwarven skills lead him quickly to a cave opening that reeks of Orc.

[Roll on p.94 gives a Big Bad of 'Orc'. We go see just how bad it is.]

[We find on p.80 that the Big Bad is a Black Moon Orc, M+ Soldier, 1HW, Rep5, AC4. That's the maximum. Other beasts will have to be less than that. We also learn that it's to be ER4.]

First card is 4D, equal to the ER so Random Event! Secret Passage! Draw QC; stairway down a level! Cards drawn until stack = 8.

Descend to level 2. KD! Another branch, going down. Replenish to 8.

Descend again. Draw 6C: PEF! I pass 2d6 finding a denizen. It's another dwarf! (Twilight Alignment). I roll a 2, plus 2 for levels plus 1 for Twilight meeting Red Sun. Enemy! Perhaps a rival delver?

There's just one and we must fight.

Turn 1: Roll 4/5. Gar't tries a challenge of People skills! Success means neutrality for now, TD leaving. Failure means combat. He passes 1d6, choosing a re-roll. He passes 2d6! Success and the TD hurls a warning to Gar't suggesting he return to the surface, then he trots off into the darkness.

Next turn: 5D.

Next: 3C: PEF. Pass 1d6: ER goes to 5. Two cards added.

JH: descend to level 4. 8 cards in deck.

KC: descend to level 5. 10 cards in deck.

2D. 9C: PEF. Pass 2d6: denizen. 7-4 = dwarf. The Twilight Dwarf won't be talked out of fighting this time.

Turn 1: Roll 4/5. CIM test is equal wins, so melee. 6d6 vs 5d6. Gar't is pushed back, TD doesn't follow up (evenly matched).

Turn 2: Gar't charges into contact. Wins combat by 2, consults damage. TD is OOF!

Gar't takes his Talos, leaves him behind.

QD. Gar't descends to level 6.

7C: PEF. Pass 1d6, but ER already at 5. 2 more cards.

QH: level 7. 6D. 4S: PEF. Pass 1d6. Add 2 more cards.

AS: The Big Bad Orc! (Remember the size difference is 2 so Orc gets +1 impact if it wins)

Turn 1: Evenly matched. Again: Orc wins by 1 success: with size difference and Orcish power, effective impact is 3. Gar't is knocked down! Gar't is OOF! Star power roll: 2,3,4,6. So damage is reduced to Carry On, Star Power reduced to 3.

Turn 2: Roll 6/1, only Orc activates. He fights! Tie on activation, so both fight at once. Gar't wins by 1; Imp=2. Pushes Orc back. He continues, but evenly matched this time.

Turn 3: Roll 1/6. Gar't attacks. Evenly matched.

Turn 4: Roll 4/6. Gar't wins, Orc is OOF! He was carrying 2 gold Talos.

In the next space, he immediately meets another Orc, a clone of the Big Bad.

Turn 1: Gar't wins and charges! Tie, evenly matched. Second round, 4:2. Rolling vs. 3, opponent is OOF! That's two Orcs down.

AH! The treasure! ( On p.99, I roll a 7. Plus level 7 gives 14. That's 5x BB's rep in Talos [25], plus 2 rolls on Magic Items. I roll 3 & 11. Jewelry and a book.)

He finds a Ring of Invisibility and a book of power (Level 2).

Exiting the dungeon, Gar't draws a 3D, meaning he escapes without further contact.

Post Adventure

Gar't tries to improve his people skills of 2, but rolls a '1'. No change.

Next he'll try heading into a town to barter his Magic Book for something more useful, and to get enough gear to establish a "home" in the caverns he just cleared.

Gar't Thorn, Star

A member of the Thorn Clan, Gar't Thorn is a dwarf and a star. Fed up with the restrictions of the clan-hold and finding his reputation poisoned by a disgruntled clan brother, Gar't has left the clan-hold and struck out on his own to seek his fortune.

Before leaving the Thorn Clan, Gar't made a quick sweep through the unwatched portions of the clan-hold and picked up whatever he could find that might be of use in his new career.

Robbery attempt in a Capalan Village

Gar't Thorn faces two Capalan thugs in a dark alley. One has a club, the other a battered sword. Neither wears armor and have clearly never faced a dwarf before.

"Drop the sack, Stumpy, and walk away," the Youth drawls, waggling his club. The Mature partner draws his battered sword.

Gar't grins as he shakes loose his great axe. "Stumpy? We'll see who's left with stumps in a moment or two."

Roll 3/4. Gar't rolls 3 wins, Youth 2, Mature 1. Gar't charges into melee. He rolls 6/6, but gets an automatic +1 pass d6 for being a star and another for being a dwarf. Pass 2d6. Youth passes 3d6, Mature passes 2d6. They meet in the middle. Melee: 4/1/2 (G/Y/M). Gar't gets +1 impact for fighting AC2, and another for being a dwarf. That gives him impact=5 vs. Y, impact=4 vs. M.

He pushes back the Youth but puts the Mature opponent OOD. Gar't follows the Youth. Gar't gets 7d6, Youth gets 5d6. Gart wins by 1 giving an impact of 3. He rolls 5, the youth goes down. The youth passes 1d6, OOF.

Gar't searches them, finds 4 Food and 2 Talos. He can't carry it all, so he leaves a Food, taking sympathy on the poor thugs.

Gar't takes advantage of his good night vision and slips back out of the village before anyone finds the bodies.

Challenges are part of everyday life for members of the Silverthorn clan. It was the severity of his failure that stunned Gar't Thorn. He had thought his ranking in the clan was higher than that. But when Chief Durolbanaki'l Thorn sends you to all the way to the South Gate to make sure the door is locked, you have to resist.

Gar't challenges the Chief: Success means someone else has to go; failure means simply that he must comply and go himself.

Chief's People skill is 5. Gar't has People 2, reduced to 1 because it's lower than the person he's challenging. Chief rolls 4 successes; Gar't rolls a 6.

Gar't selects his clan brother Dan'g to go along, and they set off to the South Gate.

Encounter rating 2. PEFs in sector 1, 2, and 6. First roll: 2/3. PEFs fail to activate, we move from sector 8 to sector 5.

Roll 6/4, no one moves; Roll 5/1, we look about, the PEFs may move but with low encounter rating, they do not.

Roll 2/2. Double, equal to encounter rating! Another PEF in sector 2.

Roll 6/6. Double, no PEFs added.

Roll 1/4, we move to sector 6 to investigate PEF. 2d6 vs. ER2: roll of 6/6, nothing there.

Roll 4/5. We move to sector 3. Nothing.

Roll 4/3. PEFs don't activate, we move to Sector 2. Two PEFs! Neither turns out to be anything. (6/6, 4/6).

Roll 2/1. We move to sector 1. Resolve PEF roll 1/6. Something in the area, ER goes to 3. But no PEFs remain, so we'll start back.

Roll 2/6. We move to sector 4.

Roll 2/2. Double and new PEF appears in sector 5, just ahead of us and to the left. We'll go investigate.

Roll 3/1. We move to sector 5, but PEF moves away (we couldn't get LOS; PEF moved away on roll of 4/4)

Roll 6/2. PEF activates, rolls 3/6 so doesn't move.

Roll 3/3. New PEF in Sector 2!

Roll 3/1. We get in sight of a PEF. Nothing (roll 6/6). Last PEF activates, moves deeper behind cover.

Roll 2/2. New PEF, Sector 1.

Roll 2/2. New PEF, Sector 1. I know. Duplicate sets of die rolls!

Roll 6/3. PEFs activate. Nearest moves toward us, into open! But it was nothing (pass 1d6. ER now 4!). One of remaining PEFs moves into sight toward us. Contact! It's a Rock Beast! (roll of 9 on my encounter table gives Rock Beasts. I roll that they are Neutral to us, the How Many roll of 3 says there is only one. Neutral reaction roll is bad, the Rock Beast will attack.)
Insight: RB is Rep6 and active: 5d6. Gar't is Star. Dan'g is Rep4 dwarf: 4d6. Result: RB goes first, charges the dwarves. CIM test, dwarves actually move to RB, but same effect.
Combat: RB 8d6, Gar't 6d6, Dan'g 6d6. Result: 2/4/3 wins. Dan'g wins by 1 (Impact target = 1 for margin, +1 for dwarf, -2 vs Massive = 0) Effective impact is 0 so Evenly Matched. Gar't gets (impact target=2 for margin, +1 for dwarf, +1 evenly matched, -2 vs Massive, -1 vs AC6 = 1), rolls a 2. RB stunned, takes Recover from KD test. Rolls 2d6, passes 2d6: stunned.

Roll 5/4. Dwarves catch their breath, RB recovers.

Roll 3/5. RB attacks. Rolls are 2/3/4. Dwarves win again. Dan'g goes first. (impact = +2 for margin, +1 dwarf, -2 vs Massive, AC6 penalty can't reduce below 1 = 1). He rolls 5. RB takes RKD, down and Stunned. Now Gar't goes. (imapct = +1 for margin, +2 prone, +1 dwarf, -2 Massive, -1 AC6 = 1). He rolls 1! Would have been OD, but RB is Hard as Nails, so Knocked Down instead. RB passes 2d6, stunned and prone.

But now the dwarves are active, and combat continues against a prone, stunned, and out-numbered opponent. The Rock Beast is dead.

A bit anti-climactic, but the last PEF turns out to be nothing.

Victory to Gar't and Dan'g!

On their return, they present the Rock Beast's head to Chief Durolbanaki'l. Neither succeeds in gaining further reputation however. Dan'g takes this opportunity to leave the company of Gar't, deciding that anyone who runs into a Rock Beast when he's just going to check on a door lock is not the kind of person he wants to be around.

Sir Reggie takes the train from Monterey to the edge of the Crown Colony of California territory. Known as the Gold Country after Lord Sutter's discovery of gold, England's frontier area is a prime target for spies from across the border in the United States.
During the trip, Captain Chapelump of the CCC army introduces himself and, despite repeated hints to the contrary, decides to accompany Sir Reggie to Gunsight. Sir Reggie prefers to travel with no one but his valet, the taciturn Mooshu Tsing Tao.
The train depot at Gunsight is on the edge of town. We join the action as Sir Reggie, Mooshu, and Captain Chapelump walk over the rise and get their first view of the quiet town.
Sir Reggie's group moves first, then Juan's group emerges from the bank. This triggers an insight test for Sir Reggie and the shooting begins.

[There was no chance for a second initiative roll! Juan dosTrece rolled "retire" and beat a tactical retreat before things got any more frantic. I'd even settled upon the rules to use: the free Chain Reaction by Two Hour Wargames.

I set up the camera and took a basic shot (above). I selected my figures and put together the stats for them. I planned to produce a nice write-up for the blog.
Then I froze. Well, I got distracted. I played with the picture. I made new scenery. I painted a few more figures. I read alternate rules.
I stalled.

It turns out that I was avoiding playing because deep down, I was afraid it might not be fun. It took three days for me to realize what was going on. I'd made it too important. It wasn't a game any more.
And that's stupid. Who will know if my Star gets killed in the first round? Only the people I tell. The point is supposed to be to play, to have fun. So I declared a "practice game" and just started rolling dice. My Star, Sir Reginald Swanleigh, member of the secret White Star Society, was killed three times in a row.

But I had fun. And it turns out that the figures on the table don't hold it against me if I kill them. Certainly, the thousands of readers of this blog won't know if I don't tell them.
So add some salt. Roll the dice! As any good GM will tell you, sometimes a quick toss of a few d6 answer a question faster than an hour of research ever will.

PeevishBoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04620205315296481596noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444927185276564911.post-40892864192241881992011-04-16T09:14:00.001-07:002011-07-26T12:21:28.623-07:00Further RRtK armies
A few people have requested copies of the Rally Round the King (RRtK) paper units, so rather than send them to everyone, I've uploaded them to another site.

So far, there's Goblins, Orcs, Stygustani, Black Moon, Brethren, Undead, and White Company/Black Company.

Jump on over to Tassano.org/games and have a look.

I'll eventually get back to RRtK, and will add more armies.

PeevishBoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04620205315296481596noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444927185276564911.post-37575750271681641832011-04-14T09:53:00.000-07:002011-04-14T10:00:39.255-07:00Making World Maps
I admit it: I'm addicted to maps. They let me explore new places without the stress of learning another language, changing money, or finding a restroom.
My favorite style of map is the old one used in Traveller, which was derived from Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion map; we now call it an icosahedron.

As Fuller described it, the Dymaxion map is free from the majority of the horrid distortions created by the Mercator projection (familiar to school children everywhere). An icosahedron map shows distances accurately along the edge of any triangle with the distortion increasing only slightly toward the center of a triangle.
And with the addition of small tabs in strategic places, the map may be cut out and glued into a reasonable 3D object. Imagine a d20 with a map painted on it...

I use these tools:

The Donjon Fractal World Generator, a square projection with height set to 400.

Adobe Photoshop (almost any version).

Flaming Pear's Flexify 2.

Here's an example from Donjon:

This was a square projection. Once I got an image I liked, I saved the image to my computer.

Load into Photoshop and run Flexify:

I turn off tabs and grids, but enable edges.
Play around with latitude, longitude, and spin until the lands are where you'd like them.

I often add an overlay of hexagons to get a leg up on mapping for gaming use.
I absolutely LOVE Hexographer, by the way. It's a Java application for making hexagon-based maps. It can run for free in your browser, or purchased to run standalone with extra features.

Sometimes, though, I'm in the mood for a more artistic map.
Here's one done in Photoshop, based upon a triangle in a different map:

PeevishBoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04620205315296481596noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444927185276564911.post-55612254136694745992011-04-13T22:08:00.001-07:002011-04-14T07:15:33.771-07:00Rally 'Round the King paper units
Being an inherently frugal gamer, and lazy to boot, I have found a good way to produce all the army units I want.

I used Adobe Illustrator (though I suppose one could use Word) to make a block that's 3 times deeper than a unit. The first year of my Two Hour Wargames fantasy campaign begins in the year 01.
Here's how the northeast quadrant looks at the outset:

For the first battle of the season, I ignored the map and allowed the Red Sun Dwarves to attack the Orcs. I was intent on comparing the battle I'd just completed using Piquet's Hostile Realms and wanted similar armies, same terrain, etc.

In the battle, the Red Sun Dwarves (RSD) narrowly defeated the Orcs, but in the process captured the Orc chieftain. This resulted in squabbles back in orc land, and the orcs ended the war in defeat. Elsewhere, the Skeleton army of undead selected the Black Moon Dwarves as their target. In RRtK, the Undead are truly a tough army: they never take reactions (the heart of THW games) and must be destroyed with weapons; they can't be driven from the field. The Black Moon Dwarves had decided to attack the Silver Elves, but when the Skeletons arrived, they went on defense.

In the end, the Skeleton army was too much for the Dark Dwarves and Undead took their land, neatly crossing the RSD territory:

01 Summer

The Summer season found the RSD forced to face the Skeletons. Still new to the campaign process, the two armies deployed only partial armies, leaving portions as garrison forces.

The Skeleton Undead attacked the Red Sun Dwarves from their newly conquered lands. Checks of the other nations revealed that no one else nearby was interested in warfare.

This time, an improved tactical sense allowed the RSD to hold off the Skeletons, the Skeleton general finally withdrawing with only his cavalry surviving. The battle is outlined in an earlier post...

At the end of the second season, the quadrant looks like this:

01 Fall

Fall is when armies motivated by loot are most likely to attack, and this is what has happened: the Red Sun Dwarves have gone to war again. This time, though they had decided to remove the remaining Orc province, they were attacked by the Mangu (Mongol-derived) horse army.

The next installment will describe that battle.

The Skeletons split their army, the basic portion returning to their home province, the 200 (or so) points added to the base remaining in the Black Moon Dwarf (BMD) territory.

The Red Sun Dwarves had crossed the BMD lands and attacked their old enemies, the Orcs. (I won't go into why I had not consulted the map before this battle.)

Now it is the Summer of the first year.

The Undead continue by attacking the Red Sun Dwarves (RSD) with their expeditionary force left behind in BMD territory. Each army took their recruiting rolls, adding a unit or two to their

forces.

The Skeleton Undead (SU) army now consists of 3 cavalry, 2 skirmish archers, and 5 infantry units.

The Dwarves will defend with 5 crossbows and 4 elite infantry units.

The RSD determined the terrain, but the initial "rough" layout was declined by the cavalry of the Skeletons. The second layout was "hilly", with a clear path on the RSD right flank.

The Red Sun Dwarves deploy first as they are seriously out-scouted. The Undead form into three bodies, the SU King in the lead unit of the cavalry column. He keeps them stationary while the right and center advance. A skirmish bow and two infantry move into the woods, seeking to hit the Dwarf left. An archer and 3 infantry are ordered to enter the center woods, and halt when they reach the far edge.

The SU right moves through woods, eventually taking fire from the 2 Dwarf crossbows; they are fanatic and don't react. They move to their own skirmish range, but it's obvious that one skirmisher in the woods isn't going to harm the dwarves the way their two crossbow units cut up the undead, so they charge.

The undead skirmish archer disappears under the crossbows, but when the undead cross the distance, the two RSD crossbows rout away in terror. The two skeleton infantry that hit the lone dwarf elite infantry make short work of it. (RSD got a roll of 6,6).

The 3 skeleton infantry in the center advance. They reached the far side of the woods, moving through the skirmish archer. At the edge of the woods, just out of crossbow range from the weak Dwarf right flank (CB/Inf/CB). The Dwarf king sends his reserve crossbow to the flank line. (His center is weak as well, having only his own soldiers and one more.)

Even with 3 crossbows shooting, the limit of one hit inflicted per firer means it will take 4 turns to destroy the advancing skeletons. They are only a bit more than one move away. The Dwarf king tries a desperate move: he sends a single soldier unit ahead of the crossbows, hoping to delay the skeleton advance long enough for the crossbows to destroy them. (I'll allow shooting into a melee as long as the target is not blocked by a friend) Just as the infantry unit moves ahead, it occurs to the king that without support, the lone infantry won't hold the undead long enough. <sigh></sigh>

The undead center moves to threat range. The Dwarf Soldiers test: Rep5. Roll is 4,6, pass 1d6. Undead move to 1", Soldiers test again at -1 for Terror threat, being charged. Roll is 2,6, and the dwarf soldiers stand and take the advance. As the undead approach and contact the advance Soldier, they enter threat range for the two crossbows. They are Rep4, supporting each other. No matter, the roll is 1,6. Missile troops retire and take a hit.

The two skeletons fight the single soldier. They roll 11, putting two hits on the AC4 dwarves. In their turn, the dwarves roll 5, +1 for Elite making 6; that's 2 hits against AC2. Now for reactions. The skeletons don't test, but the dwarves do: Rep 5, -2 hits, -1 outnumbered, -1 terror = effective Rep 1. Roll is 3/5 and they rout.

The three remaining Dwarf crossbows fire, each easily causing a hit. One skeleton infantry melts away.

The Dwarf king advances, coming up behind the last Soldier unit. Together, they withstand the attack of the two skeleton units. They give and take damage, but with the king behind them, the soldiers only give ground. They don't break...

The 3 crossbow units fire upon the sole target: a skeleton unit. It melts away.

Now the RSD king and his Soldiers melee a single skeleton unit, destroying it quickly. They pass 2d6 and stand a while longer.

The king's body withstands being charged by the two skeleton units from the woods, but roll only a combined 3, putting a single hit on the AC2 unit in front of the King. They pass 2d6 on the Involved in Melee test and stand a while longer.

The Skeleton King decides it's time to commit his cavalry. He's 3 moves away and may have mis-timed his attack.

The dwarf crossbows join the back of the melee for morale and the Dwarf King fights on: they score 3 hits on the skeletons, putting both of them at 3 hits each. At 4 hits, they die. The skeletons could not pierce the dwarf armor.

The SU king and his cavalry sweep around the woods, scaring the detached crossbow back 3". The crossbows fire on them in turn, doing 2 hits on the King in the lead of the column. He tests to see if he's at risk, but he is not.

The Dwarf King and his body destroy the two skeletons they face, and one front line dwarf gives ground.

At this point, the Undead King only has a skirmisher in the woods and the 3 cavalry in his group. He already has 2 of its 4 maximum hits. Even though a fanatic, he knows better than to destroy himself against a body of 5 dwarf units, with their king in the center. The undead concede the field and retreat.

Major pursuit phase: after all the tests, the Undead only permanently lose a single skirmish archer.

The Red Sun Dwarves add the old Dark Dwarf province to their lands, effectively blocking the Undead advances.

PeevishBoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04620205315296481596noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444927185276564911.post-31860938402273150372011-01-07T09:59:00.001-08:002011-01-27T08:33:42.284-08:00Yerba BuenaBack to the Crown Colony of California.
When Seymour takes control of Yerba Buena, he makes it his base of operations in the CCC. Using the new weapons acquired during the raid, he and six of his best braves conceived of an ambush. Added to their force was a new element, a sasquatch armed with a great club!
Their goal was the capture of the payroll on the supply wagon destined for the Golden Banks mine. They set their trap along a narrow stretch of road with a sheer drop into the river on one side, and jagged walls of rock on the other. They blocked the way with a fallen tree, and hid themselves among the trees and bushes right where the valley narrowed at a curve in the road.
Using Two Hour Wargames rules, so wonderful for the solo player, I equipped the wagon with 4 cavalry outriders, all Reputation 4 (R4). On the wagon itself was a young driver (R3) and Lt. Kipple (R5). Red Hawk (R5) and his men were placed at random as follows: I made one card for each of them, setting aside the two cards that represented the sasquatch and the chief. To the remaining six cards for the braves, I added 4 blank cards. I shuffled them, discarded three. I then added the two main character cards and shuffled again. I felt that it was important to retain the Chief and the Sasquatch on the table, but wanted some unknown number of braves, in this case between 3 and six.
I put the cards, face down, in likely places. They would be turned over and figures put onto the table once the trap was sprung.

The trap was sprung right on schedule, with the indians scattered rather more thinly than, in retrospect, was ideal.
The first casualty was the young trooper driving the wagon. He was killed by a musket ball in the first round. (Initiative was with Red Hawk).
Next round, a draw, allowed the troopers to dismount.
The Sasquatch eventually made his (low) roll and charged into melee with two troopers; battle pushed back and forth for a couple of cycles.
Two more troopers are hit, put Out Of Fight (OOF). Two indians go down, two more break away and run when Red Hawk is hit. (Loss of leader morale check)
The two troopers in hand-to-hand with the sasquatch at last get great rolls and leave it Obviously Dead (OD).
The Lieutenant and two troopers survive, and have Red Hawk in custody.
Will he be rescued by his band of followers? Will the mysterious sasquatch force return? And who is behind this sudden greedy uprising?
Only time will tell.PeevishBoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04620205315296481596noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444927185276564911.post-69191653742119736282008-12-30T20:00:00.001-08:002011-01-27T08:34:22.025-08:00Chief Red Hawk raids a mining campChief Red Hawk and 7 warriors (4 with bows) made a nighttime attack ona mining camp on Two-Claim Creek.
I dealt some cards at random to represent miners (black cards for miners, red for dummies; the Sheriff was a King, the Ace a mountain man with great experience). I use Two Hour Wargames rules, in this case "Warrior Heroes: Armies and Adventures".

The miners were aware of their approach; well, at least some were. The first ones to detect the indians happened to be the Sheriff and his deputy, sitting around a fire. (Rep 5, 3).
The Indians won the initiative, and the results: Sheriff OOF (Out of Fight) and the deputy OD (Obviously Dead).
Two bowmen move left; the Chief, a warrior and a brave move to the downed Sheriff; two bowmen and a brave more to the bushes on the right.
Red Hawk wins the initiative again, but a miner (Rep 4) drops two indians quickly. The Rep3 brave stands his ground. He doesn't have a bow, and decides not to attack. Yet.
The Rep5 Mountain man strides across the little creek, shoots, misses the Chief. He rushes into melee with a brave and a warrior, but is pushed back and back and back until he looses badly and goes OOF.
Chief Red Hawk and two pals rush one of the miners, who routs away. A second miner, in the bushes, runs away too.
With the loss of the Sheriff, the deputy, the mountain man, and a miner or two running away, the remaining miners flee also.
Red Hawk, a warrior, and two braves survive, and two of his OOFs recover. They dispatch the downed miners, rob the camp and make off.
Epilog: When the (new) Sheriff arrives, it is clear that the indians have taken gold as well as supplies and weapons. The major sea port is New London, in the east Bay, near the north end. The great Bay is protected by Fort Seymour, an island bristling with cannon and facing both the Pacific and the interior of the Bay.
Gold has been discovered in New Helvetia at Sutter's Mill, but there will be no stampede of Americans to the Mother Lode. I have selected 1846, off the coast of Mazatlan. Commodore Sloat of the U.S. Navy's Pacific Squadron is tasked with the taking of Alta California for the United States. His competition in this is the British fleet of Admiral Seymour. In the real timeline, Sloat tricks Seymour into sailing West while he makes his way to Monterey.

In my version, Seymour isn't fooled. Seymour arrives in Monterey days ahead of Sloat; hearing of the Bear Flag Revolt, Seymour raises the British flag over Monterey, leaves a garrison, and sails on to Yerba Buena and claims the harbor and all the lands of Alta California for the Crown.

When John Fremont arrives with his Delaware indians and his mountain men, he is arrested and flung into jail.

Yerba Buena never becomes San Francisco, the Republic of California yields to Britain, and at the end of the Mexican American War, Mexico is backed by Britain and surrenders only Texas and Arizona.

The boundary of the United States becomes the 49th parallel west to the Continental Divide, then south to Mexico.
PeevishBoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04620205315296481596noreply@blogger.com0
